Port Klang boss in damage control mode over PKFZ chief’s resignation

KLANG, May 21 — Datuk Lee Hwa Beng has dismissed speculation surrounding the recent resignation of the executive chairman of the scandal-plagued Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ), pointing out it had nothing to do with controversy surrounding the troubled project.

The Port Klang Authority (PKA) chairman said there was nothing scandalous about Lim Thean Shiang’s resignation.

Lee said Lim, who is also the PKA general manager, had submitted his resignation letter on May 7, citing personal reasons.

When asked if Lim was “forced” to resign following the information he gave to Barisan Nasional politicians on the audit report, Lee said he knows nothing about it.

"You have to ask him. I only know about the briefing matter through the media," he told a press conference.

It is learnt that BN politicians have been named in the audit report which contains scandalous information on the RM 4.6 billion PKFZ fiasco.

Leaked details on the report also showed that PKFZ had made RM 12 billion in losses.

BN Backbenchers Club chairman and Bintulu parliamentarian Datuk Tiong King Sing are among those said to be named in the audit report.

Meanwhile, Lee said he will now act as the chairman of PKFZ.

Lim’s assistant in PKA, Capt (retired) David R. Padman, will “cover” his duties as general manager, said Lee.

Lim’s resignation comes amid talk of a fallout between him and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

Ong had handpicked Lim to clean up PKFZ’s sagging finances.
